A typical mistake that management often makes regarding their product is to use the software developers to construct and write the user documentation. This often ends up in documentation that can only be understood by developers, and where the average user ends up having to either muddle through the system themselves or requiring support.
Creating effective and comprehensible documentation for software and systems requires a structured analysis of user types, an ability to highlight the features and benefits of the system and an approach to writing that can succinctly summarise tasks and procedures.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it! … My mantra when it comes to starting any project, no matter how simple or complex.
And if you can’t manage it, you’re undoubtedly heading towards inefficiency and a project running at a loss … that's my experience of managing user documentation projects for more than 10 years.

One of the biggest projects that I have been associated with was with C-Stores, Trainiac and TOTAL SA. After three days of scoping we mapped out a 450 plus man-day project. Multiple resources such as instructional designers, on-site consultants, artists and DTP artists contributed to different areas of the learning and facilitation material.
